Barbecue chicken wings are a celebration, party, or event classic. Be it a poolside party, end of summer get together, Super Bowl Sunday, tailgating party or a simple backyard or outdoor BBQ bash, chicken wings are devoured and enjoyed by your family and guests. However, the same old BBQ dressing makes them a tad boring at times and our taste buds scream for a change. It’s high time that our favorite party or celebration main event snack gets a makeover! A hint of vanilla bean paste is all you need to deviate from the BBQ sauce norm and give its traditional counterpart a run for its money.

The delicate, slightly sweet note of vanilla bean paste creates a striking contrast to the robust smoky, spicy note of this BBQ sauce; the right combination to make your guests beg for more. Unlike other recipes, the chicken wings are baked instead of being deep-fried for a healthy touch, drawing all attention to the star of this holiday favorite- the yummy vanilla BBQ sauce.

Chicken Wings with Vanilla BBQ Sauce - Alternate Prep and Serving Twist!

Here is a serving twist - You could bake these before your guests arrive, keep them refrigerated, make your sauce, then pop them on the grill on low to heat up before serving - if you are having an outdoor party.

Yields: 12 chicken wings


For the chicken wings:

12 raw chicken wings, skin on

1 tsp cayenne pepper, ground

Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste

Non-stick cooking spray

For the Vanilla BBQ Sauce:

1 tbsp chopped garlic

1 tbsp canned chipotle chili in sauce, finely diced

1 tbsp dark molasses

2 tbsp brown sugar

1 cup catsup

2 tbsp red wine vinegar

1 tbsp vanilla bean paste (Try to buy the best vanilla bean paste).

Note: Using Imitation vanilla extract should not be substituted if you don't have vanilla bean paste on hand, it will throw the flavor and taste off considerably.

1 tbsp butter

1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce

Salt to taste

Cooking Methods:

  1. Warm up your oven to 450 degrees F. (If it is during the hot summer months, suggest you try the alternate method and bake them the night before or early in the morning – refrigerate, then make your sauce, pour over the wings, and heat up on the grill, in a skillet or in the microwave before your guests arrive).
  2. Stuff the chicken wings into a large resealable Ziploc bag and sprinkle a teaspoon of cayenne pepper over them.
  3. Season with sea salt and lots of freshly ground black pepper and seal the bag.
  4. Give it a good shake to evenly coat the wings with the seasonings and scatter them on a baking sheet.
  5. Mist them with non-stick cooking spray to oil slightly and place in the hot oven to bake for half an hour.
  6. Remove from oven once the wings turn golden brown and deliciously crispy.
  7. While the wings bake, add a large blob of butter into a heavy-based skillet and melt over medium heat.
  8. Throw in the chopped garlic and sauté for 1-2 minutes or until fragrant.
  9. Stir in the remaining sauce ingredients and bring the sauce to a simmer; season to taste if necessary.
  10. Continue to simmer over slow flame for an hour, stirring at times, until it forms a sticky, slightly thick sauce.
  11. Remove from heat and pour it over the baked wings.
  12. Toss to coat nicely and serve right away.
  13. Enjoy! Your guests will most likely not guess that the fragrant but mellow flavor of the wings is due to the addition of vanilla bean paste in the BBQ sauce.
